The Goliathus cacicus, or Chief Goliath Beetle, is a massive insect native to West African rainforests, famous for its pearlescent, silvery-white thorax and bold black stripes. Males are the true giants of the species, reaching up to 100 mm in length and sporting a signature Y-shaped horn for battling rivals.
These beetles are surprisingly heavy; in their larval stage, they can weigh as much as 100 grams—roughly the weight of a medium apple. Because of this massive bulk, when an adult takes flight, the vibration of its wings creates a loud, mechanical drone that sounds remarkably like a passing drone or a small helicopter.
