The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is an iconic orange-and-black flyer that essentially spends its life running on a strict diet of toxic milkweed, making it taste like chemical warfare to any predator brave enough to try a bite.

This artwork was created using mixed media. Achieving the shimmering effect on the wings required millions of dots of waterproof pigment ink and nearly two dozen hours of work to capture the texture of the scales.The watercolor process involved a lot of almost transparent washes of color, layer after layer, to capture the magical glow and subtle nuances of color on the wings.
