The Arctia galactina, often referred to as the Red-Costate Tiger Moth, is a stunning moth found primarily in East and Southeast Asia. It is easily identified by its cream-colored or pale yellow forewings marked with intricate black geometric patterns, which contrast beautifully with its bright, fire-orange hindwings.

Like many of its tiger moth relatives, these vibrant colors serve as a "keep away" sign to birds, indicating that the moth is unpalatable. It is a medium-sized moth, usually boasting a wingspan between 50 mm and 70 mm, and is frequently drawn to artificial lights at night.

A fun fact about this species is its "supersonic" defense. Tiger moths like A. galactina possess specialized organs called tymbals that can produce high-frequency clicks. These clicks don't just warn predators; they are actually designed to jam the sonar of hunting bats, effectively making the moth invisible to its most dangerous nocturnal enemy!

This piece is currently exhibited as part of the ENTOMOCOSMOS, mutual project of the Museum and me as an artist.
