The Aglais io, better known as the European Peacock butterfly, is one of the most recognizable insects in Europe and temperate Asia. It is instantly identified by the large, multi-colored eyespots on its crimson wings, which mimic the eyes of an owl or a larger predator to scare off hungry birds.
When its wings are closed, the underside is a dark, dull grey—perfect camouflage that makes it look like a dead leaf while it hibernates in hollow trees or sheds during the winter.
A fascinating defense mechanism of the Peacock butterfly is its ability to "talk." If a predator gets too close, the butterfly rub its wings together to produce a distinct hissing sound (stridulation). Between the terrifying eyespots and the unexpected hiss, most predators decide it’s not worth the trouble!
